Registry cleaner software eliminates the clutter and junk that builds up in your computer's registry from installing and removing programs, deleting and creating files and surfing online which results in a fast optimized registry that keeps your computer running properly. Without such tune ups your computer can become sluggish, full of error messages and experience frequent system crashes.
Think of your registry as a huge database that holds the complete inventory and location of every file, folder, program and process that resides on your computer. This information is used to tell programs how to run and locate the files needed to perform a certain task (kind of like an huge instruction booklet) When files or programs are added to or removed from your PC, the registry is modified to make note of these changes. Overtime the registry becomes bloated and disorganized as a result of these changes leading to poor PC performance.
Manual repair and maintenance of the registry is an extremely complex task that only the most technically inclined should take on or you run the risk of losing critical data and personal information or even worse end up with a computer that doesn't work at all. With the proper software, however, registry repair becomes a relatively stress free task that will improve your PC's performance without the expensive support and maintenance bills or technical expertise.
On this site you'll find in-depth reviews to help you make an informed decision for your Registry Repair Software purchase, but if you are the least bit uncertain about using your registry cleaner software, you should ask for help from a "techy" friend or family member.
Below you will find side-by-side comparisons and reviews of the top registry cleaners. To read my review of the #1 product click here.

Max Registry Cleaner features advanced registry tuning functions that will safely optimize and compress your registry. This will increase your computer's performance, and save you valuable hard drive space.

Max Secure Registry Cleaner is an easy to use and effective tool for cleaning the Windows Registry. It offers a wide variety of custom scanning options, including a standard and deep scan.
Max Secure Registry Cleaner also offers several data protection/backup options including a backup/restore feature for deleted registry items, so that you can roll-back any changes that cause problems on your system, a full registry backup option allows you to save the entire registry not just the changes made from cleaning as well as the ability to create a system restore point if you use Windows XP.
If you have any concerns about changes made to your system or lost data Max registry Cleaner offers the most protection of any of the registry cleaners in these tests.
Auto-updates and automated scheduled scans are also available if you wish to optimize your system on a regular basis.
The deep scan option found 103 registry problems on my test system. Each problem detected has a brief description as well as a severity assessment, so you can identify and fix high-priority problems immediately
Max Secure Registry Cleaner offers a Registry Optimizer/Defragmenter. The defragmenter will remove dead items and empty space from the registry, while reordering the registry to maximize access time. This will improve system performance, while reclaiming valuable hard drive space. This feature is is easy to use, fast and efficient, and can often shrink the registry by as much as 10%.
Finally, Max Registry Cleaner offers a nice range of support features including Scan Log Analysis which allows you to submit a copy of your registry scan to their support to for analysis if you are concerned about deleting a particular item. This way they can look at you log and make sure everything is ok before deleing anything.
Also included is Live web based help so you can get answers to your questions in real time as opposed to waiting for answers by email.
Registry Fix is a robust and thorough registry scanner. It features standard, deep and custom scan options, including ignore lists. Registry fix was able to find and repair a large number of registry problems on our test system, behind only Registry Mechanic and Max Secure Registry Cleaner.
This program also features a number of helpful "Managers" to make securing and cleaning your system much easier: The Full Registry Backup Manager is a quick way to ensure that you always have a working version of the registry available. Another useful manager is the System Startup Manager, which allows to browse and remove programs that have been set to start up when Windows boots. The Add/Remove Programs Manager allows you to browse the programs installed on your system and to delete any entries or data that may have been left behind.
Registry Fix can also be configured to run at Windows Startup to ensure that the system is checked regularly for errors. Scheduled scans are not available, however, so users that run their PCs continuously will need to remember to run the scan manually.
Auto-updates are also not available, so future versions of Registry Fix must be downloaded manually.
Registry Fix offers email support as well as a help file within the application. There is no online FAQ or knowledge base available for Registry Fix at this time.
RegCure is an extremely
simple and easy to use registry cleaner
Equipped with the standard features of most registry cleaners like custom scanning options, registry optimization, backup/restore capabilities and scheduled scanning options RegCure is a satisfactory registry optimizer.
There is however not much that makes it stand out compared to our top choice Max Registry Cleaner. RegCure lacks registry defragmenting, has only one method of backup compared to 3 different ways with Max Registry Cleaner and does not have some of the more advanced support features like Live Help and scan log analysis.
If you simple want a registry cleaner without all the bell and whistles RegCure will more than meet your needs.
Error Nuker offers a scan scheduler feature. You can set up Error Nuker to run every week at a specific time, or you can run the scan manually whenever you wish.
Error Nuker is also offers automatic software updates, so that you won't have to hunt around on the website to find future versions of the software.
Another feature offered by Error Nuker is the start up program manager, which allows the user to turn on and off the various programs set in the registry to run on Windows start up.
Error Nuker also offers a unique selective undo feature that lets you choose specific repairs to roll-back, should you encounter a problem.
It may not be as thorough or as easy to use as some of the other programs, but Error Nuker offers some compelling features for users who want a clean system, but don't want to worry about it every day.
The PAL Registry Cleaner has the fewest features of the software tested, and also was the least effective in finding registry problems.
While PAL Registry Cleaner does offer a very fast registry backup function, it lacks many of the standard features found in other packages.
The interface is the least attractive of the software tested, but is easy to use. This is largely due to the fact that the PAL Registry Cleaner offers little in the way of custom scanning options.
Users looking for a bare-bones and straightforward registry cleaning solution may want to try PAL Registry Cleaner, but those looking for more options should look elsewhere.
